Cherry Blossom at Hikone Castle
Hikone castle was completed in 1622 by the Ii family who ruled over Hikone as feudal lords until the Meji restoration began in 1868. Unlike many other Japanese castles, Hikone’s tower and walls have remained intact and are now designated as national treasures. In spring the thousands of cherry trees that surround the castle cover the moat and bridge with white petals.
