In the backstreets of Kyoto’s Gion district, visitors may glimpse the iconic figure of a maiko (an apprentice geisha.) Some of these will be real maiko that will go on to become geisha, entertaining dignitaries in the ancient tea houses. Others will only wear the kimono and makeup for a few hours, before returning to their 21st Century lives.
