Zakimi Castle
On Okinawa’s main island there is a group of Gusku, ancient castles, built at the start of the 15th Century. In 2000, they became UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and stand as symbols of a time when Okinawa was not part of Japan, but a separate Ryukyu Kingdom. Zakimi Castle on the Yomitan peninsular has a beautifully simple construction, the highlights of which are its early stone archways.
